Hamsters Are Picky Eaters

March 3rd, 2010

Hamsters like varieties of food but like humans, they seem to be picky having different tastes. Until you find out what your pet is completely into, "to give" and "to avoid" food advice should be a good start.

They benefit from food bought in the pet stores – high quality food that satisfies their nutritional needs - giving them a balanced diet. Feed them prepared hamster mixture once or twice a day. You can - and it's deeply advised to - supplement their daily diet with small amounts of fresh fruit and vegetables. They also enjoy live insects, such as locusts. They're not fond of salty products and ones with very strong flavours, such as garlic or pickles. Also, sweets that humans eat like chocolate and candies, cabbage, tomato leaves, rhubarb, raw potato and its roots can be dangerous for them and should be highly avoided. Food containing honey, fruit sugar, molasses and other fattening food should be limited.

Dry food represents an origin diet for hamsters. When we actually say «dry food», by that we mean standard food from the pet stores, varieties of seeds such as sunflower seeds, nuts, kernels, sesame, peanuts, walnuts... But be careful when it comes to seeds – they usually have very high nutritional values and should be firstly given as treats. Other foods that are usually categorized as treats are dry carrots, apple sticks, yogurt drops... Dry peas, rice, dry noodles can be given in a prompt, timely manner. One spoon daily should be an adequate diet. if you have a small hamster, you can cut big seeds into pieces or you can replace them with bird food suitable for hamsters.

You can feed them herbs as well. Make sure it's not hay 'cause it can hurt their cheek pouches. They use it for collecting food which they then bring to some safer place. Make sure you don't give them food that might melt 'cause it'll be hard for the hamsters to remove it from the pouches. When it comes to herbs, dandelions and daises are recommended.

Hamsters love fresh fruit and vegetables. You can wash them before offering to hamsters to prevent salmonellosis. Carrots, broccoli, spinach, turnip, parsley are highly appreciated. Cucumber is also good as it's a source of water. When it comes to fruit, feed them banana, strawberry, apple, mango, pear but in small amounts.

They also like meat, which is a good source of protein. Feeding them chicken weekly should be a healthy supplement to their diet. Also, other food enriched with protein such as milk, cheese, and eggs should be given weekly. When you feed them new food, feed small amounts to give them time to get used to it.

And last but not least, fresh water should always be available.
